A Whole Ham

I just scored a whole ham at the grocery store for $0.99/lb! Yay! Now what? I just realized that I've never cooked a whole ham before but I couldn't let an 18lb ham pass me by. I guess I could have but I didn't want to, and I don't think my husband would have wanted me to either. While I was at the grocery store I was envisioning all of the meals that I could make with this ham: quiche, ham & potatoes, baked beans & ham, ham & split pea soup, green eggs & ham (I'm kidding on the last one.) The directions say to cook the ham at 25 minutes per pound, which means this ham is going to take 7-8 hours. I better get started.
Do I have a large enough baking dish? Check.
Aluminum foil? Check.
Clean oven? Um, I'll clean it after the ham cooks.
Ingredients for ham glaze? I'll make it up as I go along.
So off I go to cook the ham.

Intro

I've wanted to start a blog for a long time. The other night my husband actually took the first step of creating his own blog. Not to be outdone I thought to myself, “No way! If he can do it, I can do it, too!” A few clicks of the mouse and here we are. It's just that easy.

The title “Soak the Beans” came from a chore I do almost on a weekly basis, or sometimes just think about doing. Ever since I discovered that soaking beans is no big deal, I find that just remembering to soak the beans has become the biggest obstacle. When I forget to soak the beans we eat lentils or grilled cheese sandwiches. On those nights, I feel like a failure. I mean really, it's not that hard to soak a pound of dry beans, and I love beans.

So what can you expect to find in this blog? Good question. You can expect to find blog entries primarily about frugal living because we have a one-income household in these "hard economic times". You will also find entries that discuss raising a child with special needs, family dynamics, matters of faith, things that amuse me, things that annoy me. In short, you can expect to find blog entries about things I do or think about a least once a week. Welcome to Soak the Beans. Enjoy your stay.
